Checking in on friends and your email

SSI Spotlight Fall 2020 - Nilka Montero

nilka

Welcome to Rice and happy start of the semester!

My name is Nilka, one of your FLI Ambassadors! We know that the transition from high school to college can be hard but I, alongside Kami, am going to give you a couple of tips that will make it a little bit easier!
As a first semester student, I vastly underestimated the importance of frequently checking your Canvas and email account. There were so many important deadlines and information that I missed because I didn’t. Get into the habit of checking both of these at least two to three times a day to avoid missing any important deadlines or information. You can also download the Canvas app and turn on notifications to make sure nothing slips by!

Even though this semester is going to look a little (okay, well a lot) different than normal, you can still make the most out of it whether you will be remote or on campus! Clubs will be hosting a ton of virtual social events for you to be able to check out and connect with other students! You can still build and maintain friendships even if you will not be able to physically be close to them.

You can also Zoom game nights with friends using free games such as Among Us (a mobile app that is similar to Mafia) or skribbl.io. You might have to put in a little bit more effort to connect with others this semester, but it will be so worth it!

We are so excited to have you here at Rice! And whether you’ll be in person or remote, we know that you will still be able to add so much to our community. Hopefully this will help you out a little bit as you start the semester!
