My reasoning for wanting to become a FLI ambassador is quite simple. This role gives me an opportunity to foster a community and equip me with the necessary information to be a resource to other FLI students. The thought of contributing to these goals is what made me really want to become an ambassador. I love our FLI community and I especially love helping plan events for us! I know all the other ambassadors can agree that seeing FLI students show up to our events has been so nice and rewarding.

My FLI identity is something that I embrace and am truly proud of. Being a FLI student has given me a unique experience that has shaped the person I am and my time here at Rice. Though financial struggle may be more familiar to me than most, being extremely hard-working and appreciative of the littlest things are other characteristics that I believe come from my experience of being a FLI student.

One huge challenge I faced during freshman year was my inability to ask for help. I tried to bear a lot of the stress and insecurity I felt as a new student by myself and consequently felt like I lacked a support system on campus. After meeting new people and taking it upon myself to embrace my FLI identity, I have found several communities that bring me a lot of happiness and fulfillment.

I’m involved within my college (Hell Yeah!) as RPC Rep and as a Baker Spirit Committee Head. I am also involved in organizations like Rice Vietnamese Student Association (VSA).

What's been your favorite class so far? I am currently taking a class with Dr. Morgan called The Archaeology of Food. The readings in this class have been so eye-opening and I’ve enjoyed learning about food beyond the physical. Also, we had a forager come to campus to show us what foods we have available to us — it doesn’t get better than that!

What do you do when you aren't in class? When I’m not in class, I’m probably somewhere studying class/exam material (I know y’all can relate). However, outside of school, I enjoy working out, playing my guitar, and talking to others about anything and everything!

Any advice for other FLI students? There are SO many resources on campus for us! If you don’t know something, always ask! Being in the know is so important.
