What is something you’re proud of this year?

This year I earned my first internship, which is something I am very proud of. An internship always seemed like such an elusive and daunting thing. However, the encouragement from a friend who graduated last year (shoutout Zach) led me to applying for a position at Shell. After going through multiple stages of interviews, I was offered a position as Mechanical Engineering Intern.Overall, I am so excited and grateful to learn and grow this summer.

What advice would you give to your freshman self?

I would encourage my freshman year self to be patient with herself and her path. Everything does not have to happen immediately. Making friends, joining clubs, understanding your classes, and so much more will come with the proper timing. I would say not to worry, assuring her that everything meant for her will come in due time.

How have you utilized the SSI office this year? How has RESP been beneficial for you this year?

Every week I meet with my RESP counselor, Ari. Since freshman year, every Friday I’ve walked into Ari’s office with a slew of information, questions, comments, and complaints. She always receives my yapping with open arms and a bright smile. No matter what I bring up Ari always has a response that reassures, comforts, or informs me, and I have honestly come to look forward to our weekly sessions. Furthermore, I was able to experience the other side of O-week this year by becoming an advisor. O-week was such an amazing experience that connected me with my greatest friends and mentors, and I am very grateful that I got to help new students do the same. Being an advisor taught me so much about engaging with and helping others; really enlightening me on how important the endeavors by the SSI office are.

Any advice for other students?

You never know what could come out of something, so try it all. My friends and family all know me as someone who never says no. I believe there is no to low harm in trying something new. Stepping outside my comfort zone has led me to playing sports I never even considered through intramurals, taking an improv class, becoming a Beer Bike Coordinator, and so much more. Just try it-- and remember embarrassment is a mindset.
